men’s shirt laundry bag part two

Here’s the finished laundry bag for Mr. GC:

He loves it (I wasn’t sure how he would like it).  It was a fun and very easy project.  I cut off the sleeves of two old oxford shirts and then sewed up the holes along the flat felled seam line.  I then buttoned the shirts together and sewed them together along the topstitching of the front plackets.  I turned the shirts inside out and sewed up the bottoms of the shirts to make a bag.  I made a drawstring by cutting strips from one of the sleeves (I believe they were 1 1/4 inches wide and I sewed several together end-to-end until I got a drawstring the length I wanted.  I folded the long strip in half and sewed from one end to the other, leaving an opening in the middle so I could turn the ends of the drawstring with my fasturn tool.  I was originally going to cut holes in the collar stand and use that as my casing, but instead I decided to stitch the collars to the shirts along their topstitching and use the collars as the casings.  I fed the drawstring through with a safety pin and then knotted the ends together to form a loop.  I’m happy with the result and, like I said before, Mr. GC loved it.  I suppose it’s a joke –a laundry bag made from old laundry–or would that be postmodern and ironic . . .

We’re back!

We had a fabulous time at the beach–wish we could have stayed longer.  We went to Seagrove Beach on the Florida panhandle–the sand is so soft and white and lovely to walk on.  I had 2 new skirts to wear there:  the vintage stretch & sew flared wrap and the Burda WOF balloon skirt in rayon jersey.  Plus I finished hemming the (modified) vintage stretch & sew four-gored skirt in a fabulous black and white print and resewed the waistband on the Decades of Style Multigrain skirt that my MIL had altered for me.  Speaking of Decades of Style–check out this pattern:   product_thumb1.jpg

That pattern is on my wishlist!

I hope to have reviews up  at PatternReview for my skirts soon and post photos here.

Off to the beach . . .

Tomorrow the whole family is headed to the beach!  Usually we visit family for our vacations so it will be nice to just be the 5 of us for once.  I finished the shirt laundry bag and a rayon/lycra jersey wrap around skirt from a 70’s vintage Stretch & Sew pattern.  I will post about those when we get back.  I also have a skirt cut from the June Burda World of Fashion magazine that I’m going to try to sew up tonight so I can take it with me–not the one I pictured before but this one:balloon skirthttp://www.burdamode.com/index,1270777-1000019-1503695-1503698-1503788-1503791-1503792,enEN.htmlburda world of fashion balloon skirt

Okay, today I can’t get the photo in my post like I did last time.  I have no idea what I’m doing wrong.

Finally cleaned up the sewing room . . .

I have really very little time to sew so keeping the sewing room tidy is a chore that I put off as it cuts into my sewing time.  But I did it last night!  It’s not “selling the house” tidy, but it’s “will let people not related to me see it” tidy.  Actually, it had been at the point at which I really didn’t want people I am related to seeing it either . . .   Well with a tidy sewing room I have no excuse to put off making the laundry bag so I hope to start it tonight, but what I really want to sew is some stuff for myself from the June Burda WOF like . . .Modell Photo

men’s shirt laundry bag part one

Father’s day is coming up and I wanted to make something for Mr. Gray Cat, who sometimes comments on the fact that I rarely sew anything for him.  The laundry bag he uses for his shirts is a mildewy, torn disgrace so I thought I’d sew him a new laundry bag (using only my stash as I don’t feel like I should spend any more money on  fabric this month).  In my stash I had a couple of his old button down shirts and my original idea was to cut them up and combine with other fabrics in a patchwork pattern.  But looking at the shirts gave me an idea that I think will work.  I buttoned the shirts together and they are plenty big enough to make a bag if I stitch alongside the buttons and close up the bottom.  I’ll also cut off the sleeves and cut them up to make the drawstring.  I think I can use the collar stand as a drawstring casing.

Hello!

Why Gray Cat Sewing?  I love to sew and hope to post about my sewing projects here.  Plus, I’ve always had a fondness for the gray cat–who certainly isn’t the icon that the black cat is.  The gray cat is shadowy, velvet soft, less defined.  And it happens to be the name of the stuffed animal my daughter used to carry around everywhere she went.
